Presenting Kase Clip-in Set of 4 filters for Nikon Z6, Z7

This is a set of 4 filters

  • ND1000

  • ND64

  • Night Pollution

  • UV Filter

What’s unique about these filters is that they do not go in front of the lens, they’re clipped instead in front of the sensor.

I know what you’re thinking, but trust me, it’s much easier when you try it in person. Unless you have the dexterity of a handicapped elephant, the chances that you’ll damage your sensor is next to zero.

The first thing you’ll realise is that even though the filters are small, they’re big enough that they’re too big to drop into the mount opening, which makes it easier to install. Kase does provide some tools for the installation, but I’m so confident that I don’t even bother using them. You do however need the “guitar pick” to remove the filter.

Pros

I’ve had about a couple of weeks experience with the filters now, and here are the benefits of using clip in filters instead of the traditional filters that you mount on the lens

  • No need for filter holder on the lens means no vignetting ever, no matter what wide angle lens you’re shooting with

  • No need for big expensive filters. We all know that large 150mm filters for UWA lenses costs a kidney or two, but having filters near the sensor eliminates this problem

  • No fumbling around in the dark for night/astro photography. Just mount the filter (likely night pollution filter in this case) beforehand, put the camera in your bag and get shooting.

  • No need to remove filter/holder when you’re changing lenses. The filter stays in the camera body.

  • Lighter and smaller package to carry around

  • Much cheaper than traditional square filters

Downsides

Unfortunately, the obvious downsides are

  • Possible exposure to dust particles when you mount the filter

  • No way for a polarising filters since you can rotate the filters once it’s installed

  • No way for GNDs or Reverse GNDs since you can’t adjust the filters in the body
